How to read a before and after photo
Liposuction is body contouring, not only fat removal. A good abdominal result is more than a flatter stomach. It is a cleaner line from the waist to the abdomen, less fullness in the lower belly and a better balance between the midsection and the hips. The same idea applies to the arms, thighs, back, neck and chest.
Check that the treated area blends into the areas around it. Smooth transitions, even sides and a shape that looks natural in real life matter more than a single camera angle.
What to look for in any before and after photo:
- Symmetry, and a body that still looks natural from more than one angle.
- A waist that flows into the hips, and an abdomen that does not look scooped out.
- Arms and thighs that look refined, not overdone.
- A male chest that looks flatter and stronger, not hollow.
Compare yourself with patients whose body type is close to yours. A lean, athletic patient and a patient after pregnancy can both have excellent results, but their goals differ, so the most relevant photo is more useful than the most dramatic one.
Then check the timing. Healing takes months, and the best photos are taken once swelling has faded and the contour lines have settled. At your consultation, ask when an after photo was taken, which technology was used and whether the patient had other procedures as well.
- The first few weeksSwelling, firmness, uneven tightness and fluid retention are common. Clothes may fit differently right away, but the treated area can still look puffy, so photos from this stage say little about the final shape.
- One to three monthsThe shape usually becomes more defined as swelling settles and the contour lines show.
- Three to six monthsMost patients see a much clearer result. When larger areas were treated, or skin quality was a concern, refinement can continue after that.
The procedures in these photos
- Lipo 360
- Liposuction all the way around the torso in one procedure: the abdomen, the flanks and the back. These are the areas of the Body 360 package. Liposuction
- Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL)
- Fat taken from areas like the abdomen or thighs is moved to the buttocks for a fuller, natural shape. In these photos it was done together with Lipo 360. Brazilian Butt Lift
- Renuvion
- Helium plasma and radiofrequency energy contract collagen and tighten loose skin. It is often done alongside liposuction. Renuvion skin tightening
- The sacral triangle
- The area at the base of the spine, just above the buttocks. Treating it with the abdomen and both flanks shapes the lower back and waist together.
- Lipomas
- A lipoma is a soft, fatty lump under the skin. In the outer thigh photo, Dr. G removed lipomas from the saddlebag area with liposuction.
- Lipedema
- A chronic condition in which painful fat builds up, often in the legs. Dr. G treats it with liposuction, working carefully around the lymphatic vessels and nerves in those areas. Liposuction for lipedema
What liposuction can and cannot do
A realistic result can still look dramatic, as long as it looks natural. Expect a better shape, more definition and better proportion. Do not expect liposuction to replace weight loss, remove severe loose skin or create a body type that does not fit your frame.
The patients who do best are often already doing many things right. They exercise, eat fairly well and still have areas that will not change. For example:
- Mothers who want a cleaner waist and lower abdomen after pregnancy.
- Men who want a flatter, firmer chest or a more defined midsection.
- Patients after weight loss who want the shape of their progress to show.
Sometimes liposuction alone is enough. Sometimes the better plan adds skin tightening or fat transfer, or treats areas in stages. Dr. G tells you which applies to you at your consultation.
What shapes your own result
- Skin elasticitySkin that springs back well tightens on its own after fat is removed. Thinner or looser skin may need Renuvion or another skin tightening treatment alongside liposuction to look smooth.
- How many areas are treated togetherTreating the flanks without the abdomen improves one area. Treating both shapes the whole waist. The same goes for the back and waist, or the chest and abdomen in male patients.
- A stable weightLiposuction removes fat cells from the treated areas for good, but it does not stop future weight gain. Results hold best when you are close to a weight you can keep and want to treat areas that diet and exercise have not changed.
- RecoveryYour compression garment, lymphatic drainage massage, walking, drinking enough water and following the post-operative instructions all affect how smoothly the tissue settles.
- TimeYour body still ages after liposuction. Hormones and skin still change, and weight can still move. The change in shape lasts in the treated areas when the rest of your routine stays steady.
